Besides a song's title, there is more information to find within an audio file's tag. This is how a media player is able to provide you with information like who composed a song, when it came out or what genre it belongs to. Some audio files come with blank tags or the information can be wrong. Windows will not help you in this regard, but a tag editor will. Simply named MP3 Tag Editor, this application enables you to edit tag information, rename audio files, organize them and much more.

The software is free to try for 30 days. A standard wizard will guide you through the setup process, which will not take long to complete. Compatibility will not be an issue, regardless of your Windows version and you can run the program even with older hardware.

There is no need to load your files into a list before editing any tags. You can explore the files and folders on your hard drive on MP3 Tag Editor's interface, just like in a standard explorer window. All files are filtered automatically, so you will find only audio files. The program provides support for MP3 files, WMA, OGG, ASF and other audio formats.

The right side of the interface is divided in two areas. The top portion is where your files are displayed, along with their tag information and the bottom part is where the tags can be edited. In other words, you can browse through your audio files the same way you would in Windows Explorer and edit their tag information instantly, by simply typing in separate fields, beneath the files list. General and advanced information, lyrics and a picture can be inserted under separate tabs. General information includes details like title, artist, album, genre, year and more. A track's original artist, encoding, copyright and a URL can be specified under the Advanced tab.

Lyrics can be associated with any track by pasting them as plain text under the Lyrics tab. If you want to add a picture (the album's cover) as well, you only need to browse for one on your hard drive. When you fill in one or more information fields, a Save icon will appear next to them, so you can store each detail (title, artist, etc) separately.

Tag information can be acquired for individual files or a whole folder, from a free online database. The options are located on the toolbar, and you just need to click them, after selecting your files. MP3 Tag Editor can also batch rename files, save them to an M3U playlist or search for a specific audio track, by one or more details from its tag information. The software features a series of controls for Winamp as well. You can find them in the Tools menu or display them on the interface's toolbar. Besides running or closing the player, the software's functions include playback controls and options for playing a selected audio file or adding it to Winamp's playlist.

Pros

MP3 Tag Editor's interface offers the same functionality as Windows Explorer, but it provides you with additional tools for editing tag information, renaming audio files and much more. Tag information can be edited just by typing and saving. Access to a free database, the program's search function and Winamp controls are just a few functions which make MP3 Tag Editor a useful tool.

Cons

You can access only one online database. MP3 Tag Editor lets you do much more than edit tag information. With its smart features, your audio files can be arranged in a well organized collection.
